NOLL WINS SEASON OPENER AT CENTRAL ARIZONA RACEWAY

Peoria’s Jason Noll drove his Atlas Logistics MRT Chassis to the win Saturday night to open the 2013 season at Central Arizona Raceway. Noll was able to claim his first IMCA Modified feature win of the season, after holding off Marlyn Seidler from Underwood, ND. Kearney resident Eric Kelley took off and hid in the Super Stock feature while Danny Price from Laveen claimed the Pure Stocks. Terry Cornwell was in the right place on the last lap of the Mod Lite feature and took the win.

The IMCA Modifieds brought a stellar field of 20 cars to do battle, but the night was over early for Shawn Zelenka and Terry Haven as they scratched from the feature. Marlyn Seidler and Jason Noll were the front-row for the feature and Noll shot to the lead with Seidler and Anthony Madrid in tow. Ricky Thornton Jr driving a borrowed car from Derek Huggins settled into fourth with Spencer Wilson in fifth. Madrid broke and then cars scattered for a lap 10 caution. Dave Caldwell spun in turn 4, while Jesse Patterson and Eric Center were trying to climb over each other off the top of turn 4. Thornton slipped off the top of the track on the restart and fell back as Wilson was now third over George Fronsman and Don Earven.

Steve Stultz spun for a caution on lap 12 which sent Josh Walters off the top of the track to avoid Stultz. Seidler and Noll put on a great battle for the lead and Thornton stopped for a lap 16 caution. Fronsman and Earven started a battle for fourth, while Seidler tried everything to get by Noll. Noll took the win followed by Seidler, Wilson, Fronsman and Earven. After going from the back to the front twice, Thornton Jr settled for a seventh place finish.

The Super Stocks brought an 11-car field, but the night ended early for Ted Robinson, Stacey Bennett, Harland Morehart and Mike Brigner. Eric Kelley led lap one over Tommy Thompson and George Fronsman. Kelley opened up a huge lead and Fronsman moved into second on lap 4. Dave Kelley spun Thompson for a lap 10 caution, and contact between Marshall Miles and Fronsman sent Fronsman off turn 3 moving Steven Ashcraft into third. E Kelley was in his own zip code and took the win over Miles, Ashcraft, Fronsman and D Kelley.

All 19 Pure Stocks survived to start the feature, with Danny Price and Arron Hetrick sitting on the front row. Price led early over Hetrick and Dingus Morrow. Price opened up a comfortable lead while Zack Tate moved into fourth over Bo Partain. Chuck Thornton over-corrected and spun facing the wrong way for a lap 6 caution. Ty Weidener shot out of a cannon on the restart and zoomed to third with Morrow getting bumped to fourth over Partain. Matthew Mabbitt spun for a lap 10 caution, and Partain along with Weidener got by Hetrick on the restart. While Weidener and Partain fought for second, Price took the win. Partain settled for second ahead of Weidener, Hetrick and Morrow.

Terry Cornwell and PJ Jinzo started on the front row for the Mod Lite feature. Cornwell took the early lead with Tony Martin settling into second over AJ Martin as it was a 3-car battle. AJ Martin tried the outside at first, and showed the line to Tony Martin. The Martin family both got by Cornwell, then AJ Martin spun to being out a one lap shootout. Tony Martin spun on the final corner and Cornwell took the win. AJ Martin rebounded for second over Vince Perez, Mark Hammill and PJ Jinzo.

Central Arizona Raceway returns to action on March 9 featuring IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pure Stocks, X Mods and AMA Modlites.
